Birmingham SHOUT : Gay and Lesbian

Thanks everyone for your over-whelming support Monday! We really rose the roof December 8th with a sell-out crowd for the screening of The Times of Harvey Milk. Those attending know it was an emotional evening packed with great prizes, inspiring films, and special guests. Of note were Patricia Todd, Alabama's first Gay politician and District 54 representative, and Glenn Shadix, star of stage and screen. You may recognize Glenn from Heathers, Beetlejuice, The Nightmare Before Christmas, and Planet Of The Apes among some eighty other films.

If you missed Monday be sure to attend the next screening this spring.
Remember: buy your tickets in advance because we're sure to pack the house again.

The Alabama Moving Image Association, best known for the nationally recognized Sidewalk Moving Picture Festival, is proud to present the fourth annual Birmingham SHOUT Gay + Lesbian Film Festival. Since its creation, this festival has recognized the growing gay and lesbian communities in the Magic City as well as the increasing demand for alternative/independent films in our area. The festival showcases narrative films, documentaries and shorts by new and established artists, and offers filmgoers the rare opportunity to connect to topics of interest to the LGBT communities, as well as to interact with attending filmmakers.

The past three years have proven that the LGBT communities in Birmingham are hungry for more events that reflect who they are and where their passions lie. Our inaugural opening night film, small town gay bar, was shown to a packed theatre and this electric energy continued the rest of the weekend. In 2007, we kick-started the year’s festivities by hosting Margaret Cho for a fundraising concert performance. We also increased the festival by one day, had a phenomenal film lineup, and gave Birmingham a very special weekend treat. Alan Cumming, one of the most talented actors of our time, joined us on Saturday night to present his film, Suffering Man’s Charity. He was also honored with the first ever Beacon Award for increasing the visibility of LGBT characters and issues in popular media.

Alan Cumming"I was honored to be a part of Birmingham SHOUT. Birmingham is lucky to have such a vibrant and exciting festival."
